Iraq war prompted attack on Aust embassy: suspect

By Indonesia correspondent Tim Palmer

The key conspirator arrested for the bombing of Australia's embassy in Jakarta last September says the attack was launched because of Australia's involvement in the invasion of Iraq.

The claim has been made to police by 30-year-old suspect Rois, who will face a verdict later this month for his role in the attack.

The transcript of the police interrogation of Rois, which took place just two months after the bombing killed 11 people outside Australia's Jakarta embassy, shows the suspect being asked the purpose of the attack.

Rois told police it was because "the Australian Government is one of America's allies that gives most support to the American policy of slaughtering Muslims in Iraq".

He said that the bombers' goal was "for Australia to stop repressing Muslims especially in Iraq".

Rois criticised Australia's interference in other Muslim countries, including Indonesia.

Rois also told police the mastermind of the attack, Malaysian Dr Azahari bin Husin, had said funding for the bombing came from Osama Bin Laden by a courier.

But Attorney-General Phillip Ruddock has told Channel Nine he is sceptical of Rois's claims.

"The linkage with Iraq is of course what you would expect them to say but bin Laden was active in relation to promoting terrorist activity well before any engagement in Iraq," Mr Ruddock said.

"Australia was targeted first back in the year 2000 in Singapore by the bin Laden operation."

The truth of the matter is obvious, though it i still being denied by Howard.
We were and still are targets for terrorism because of our part in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. This threat has been amplified by Howard prancing around with Bush, a spectacle he rejoiced in, and one not missed by those who want to punish us. The queston now is not whether we will be targeted by terrorists on our soil, but when and by what means.
Howard is playing a dangerous game, and as usual, he is being loose with the truth.
Terrorism has never solved a political problem, but it is outrageous that Howard has left us open to such barbarism.
The coalition is not winning the war on terrorism in Iraq. It has already lost. The US will once again install a puppet government in Iraq, (one who is lready showing signs of being tyrannical and repressive, and has requested us to send more troops) and then retreat from a situation it had no concept would happen, and one it has no clue how to handle.

The US has already signaled it will reduce its troop numbers in Iraq, in response to pressures at home from the unacceptable body count, and the opinion polls which threaten the Bush government. It will have installed a regime which no one trusts, and a strengthened military who might prove to be a problem in the future. If the Sumis are not satisfied with their representation in the new government, then civil war will follow, ans we are seeing evidence of this already. With our involvement the US has opened up a new theatre of terrorism where any tin pot group with a chip on their shoulder can join in and learn the ropes.
An estimated 25,000 CIVILIANS have been killed in Iraq.

The unpleasant truth about Australia, is that our Government (and our opposition) have no policy on Iraq. only a platitude by Howard that we wll exit "when the job is done". This is code for when the US pulls out, and tells us to get out too.

Another unpleasant truth about Australia is that in the next general elections, as in the last elections, no party (apart from the Greens) will mention Iraq. Not unless we suffer an attack by terrorists. Then we will hear another platitude by Howard:"we will not let our foreign policy be dictated by terrorist". Foreign policy? but Howard, remember, we don't have one!
