Tilting for Empire

Well now it’s been confirmed that Howard was given orders to send more troops to Iraq, before Christmas. If you remember the “light at the end of the tunnel” which was used about the Vietnam War, The Iraq equivalents have been WMD, then regime change, then democracy. Now apparently it’s about tilt. Tilt the war in the US favour. Yeah 450 unprepared Aussie soldiers should be able to do it?

I don’t think Howard realised how unpopular this deployment would be. The irony is that it is tilting the regime change in OZ. One more blaring fault like that, and Howard would get a tap on the back by Costello. Well there are other ministers who would want the job, but Costello has the cleanest record. He sits glumly by Howard during his speeches on Iraq, looking just like Sylvester cat. Thinking all the time how he would run Australia. Charles would be told he wasn’t welcome, for a start.

Then he would tell the US where to get off, and extricate our troops out of Iraq. The US doesn’t have an exit date, because they don’t plan on leaving. They will have a big base of forces, so they can influence Middle East interests. That is their plan, whether they can achieve it is another matter. Costello is smart enough to pull us out before it gets really ugly. We hope.

Robert Fisk it THE expert on Iraq, have a look at the link below and find out what is the real game play in Iraq. He will be in Australia soon, so we will get a new perspective from him. One that is informed and independent.

Meanwhile there is to be another worldwide protest against the invasion of Iraq. http://www.stopwarcoalition.org/ (Maybe it’s about laying down candles in the rain – but it’s also about flexing our strength.) Iraq had a bad regime. There are many regimes that are worse. Diplomacy is the way to overcome these errant systems. War is not, should not be an option in 2005. Iraq is worse off now than it has ever been. The situation is very fluent, but the governing institution that is pasted on, will not have the authority or allegiance of much of the population, and could well end up becoming more repressive than the previous regime. The US would back any kind of regime that keeps the oil flowing.
